Difference between conservative vs. republican or liberal vs democrat?

It seems like nowadays, I hear the words 'liberals' and 'conservatives' used a lot more than 'republicans' and 'democrats'. Are these used interchangeably or are conservatives and liberals different than their co-parties. Thanks
